A Stranger in the Homeland, at Home in the Distance

German: The most widely spoken language, used in the eastern, northern, and central regions of the country.

French: Spoken in the western regions, especially in cities like Geneva and Lausanne.

Italian: Spoken in the southern part of the country, especially in the canton of Ticino.

Romansh: A local language spoken in the canton of Graubünden in southeastern Switzerland.

Based on mandatory health insurance for all citizens, provided by private companies.

There is no free state-funded healthcare.

Insurance premiums vary by residence, age, and chosen annual deductible (franchise).

Insurance covers most treatment and hospital costs, while patients pay the initial deductible and 10% of costs (up to a limit).

Switzerland is among the most expensive countries due to high wages and a strong economy.

Particularly costly: rent, groceries, and dining out.

Major cities like Zurich and Geneva are much more expensive than rural areas.

Average monthly expenses (excluding rent) for a single person are around $1,630 USD.

Monthly rent varies by city and apartment size, starting at ~1,700 CHF for a one-bedroom apartment.

Switzerland is divided into three main cultural regions: German, French, and Italian-speaking areas.

Language differences create clear cultural distinctions between cantons.

People in French and Italian regions tend to value family and friendship ties more than in German regions.

Each canton has its own dialects, traditions, and political structures, creating significant diversity.

Usually obtained after 10 years of legal residence and holding a C-permit (permanent residence).

Applicants must demonstrate language proficiency (in the canton’s official language), integration into Swiss society, and compliance with the law.

Citizenship via marriage may be easier but still requires a minimum period of residence.

A work and residence permit is required.

For non-EU/EFTA citizens, the employer usually applies on your behalf and must prove that no suitable candidate is available in Switzerland or the EU/EFTA.

Required documents typically include passport, employment contract, and proof of education/diploma.

The type of permit (L, B, or G) depends on the employment contract duration and residence status.
